Title

Computing "Framing": Many approaches, one task?

Abstract

"Emphasis framing" - the choice in text production of highlighting certain aspects of a contentious issue, while neglecting others, has received a lot of attention in various Social Sciences, and in the past few years also attrachted researchers in Computational Linguistics. It has often been lamented that the concept of "framing" is understood in many different ways - both within and across disciplines. After describing a series of experiments that we ran on classifying framing in editorials from "Nature" and "Science", I will point out that the wider landscape of computational approaches and implementations is equally scattered, which leads to the question whether there is actually a single common task being addressed.
