Invited Talk by Khalid Al-Khatib: On the Perception of Stance and Frame Biases in Language
We like to invite you to our upcoming invited talk by Assist.-Prof. Khalid Al-Khatib from University of Groningen. The talk will take place on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at 16:00, as part of our graduate seminar in Room 1630 at Appelstraße 9A:
Title: On the Perception of Stance and Frame Biases in Language
Abstract:
Biased language may influence our perceptions of society's problems and thus drive our decisions on various critical topics. In the first part of this talk, I will present our recent study for examining the human perception of stance bias in argumentation. The study shows that people can detect the imbalance in stance, particularly in the case of relative judgments (i.e., "Is text X more biased than text Y?"). In the second part, I will present our group work on the perception of responsibility in news reports of gender-based violence. The study reveals that the perception is strongly affected by the use of certain grammatical constructions and semantic frames.
External participants (i.e. neither students nor employees of LUH) are kindly requested to send a short, informal email to office@ai.uni-hannover.de to register.
